The monastic garden

The current look of the monastic garden is the result of the overall baroque reconstruction of the area by K. and K. I. Dientzenhofers with partial later arrangements.

The part of the enclosed religious order, i.e., the lower part, where the actual monastery building  is located, is open to the public daily from 6:45 a.m. till 8:00 p.m.; (the  Vojtěška pavilion, according to  legend was the meeting place of St. Adalbert and the Duke when the monastery was founded – this pavilion is accessible only within the organised guided tours).  The so-called upper garden (to the north of the monastery, above the enclosed religious order part) is permanently open to the public.

Gallery Entrance

The Gallery Entrance has exhibited the works of young artists to the public since December 2012 and is located in the left wing of the newly reconstructed orangery in the lower (terrace) garden of  Břevnov Monastery.

The orangery, designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, was in a forlorn condition, one in which it remained until recent reconstruction work in accordance with the original plans.

The investor in the reconstruction work is the Benedictine Archabbey of St. Adalbert and St. Margaret. Most of the funds were received from the EU structural fund; also the city district of Prague 6 was involved in the reconstruction work.

Open: Thursday – Sunday /12.00 p.m. — 6.00 p.m./

Ecological hotel The Adalbert

The  Adalbert Hotel was to become the first ecological hotel in the Czech Republic in 2006. At the same time it became the first recipient  of the “Eco-friendly Service” certificate. The accommodation runs to 23 rooms (44 beds in total). Have a look at the current price list and facilities to see if the  Adalbert Hotel meets your expectations.

Besides accommodation it is possible to organize a conference in one of the 3 hotel lounges, which seat 6, 25 and 40 people (in standard row seating arrangements).

Old Bohemian restaurant Klášterní šenk

The restaurant Klášterní šenk can be found within the Břevnov Monastery in the vicinity of the ecological hotel The Adalbert. Whether you come for refreshment while walking in the monastic garden, to eat your lunch from the favourably priced menu  or just to sit for a while with your friends, the cosy ambience of this old restaurant with its open fire  will warm not only your body, but also your soul.

The selected delicacies of  Czech cuisine are accompanied with light and dark Klášter beer, but also wine lovers will find something to their satisfaction. During the summer months the garden tables are laid up in the alley outside of the restaurant, where you can take in the fresh air. If you are thinking about organizing a celebration for more people, you may be surprised to learn  that 85  people can be seated  in the restaurant, and for less formal sit down affairs it can even take up to 120 guests. Very popular are also wedding receptions, because the Basilica of St. Margaret in Břevnov is a popular place for wedding ceremonies with its the surroundings making a pleasant backcloth for such a special day.

If you would like to come to the restaurant for dinner, we recommend you  book a table in advance, either by telephone or via the booking form.

Publishing company

The Benedictine Archabbey of St. Adalbert and St. Margaret preserves the ancient tradition of  modest publishing . It is belived that there used to be a scriptorium (a writing room) where the books required for  worship, sermon collections   and historical records were “published” - in other words they were copied and decorated there. Today’s publishing activities at the Břevnov Monastery intend to satisfy those readers who have – whether personally or professionally – interests in the origin and history of monasticism, spirituality and literary relics of early Christianity, an interest in the Benedictine saints and the influence of Czech Benedictine monasteries generally.
